I am one of the many German students studying abroad. I am one of the people who love travelling. I can't sit still, I always have to do stuff. I am curious, always chasing for stories. Stay here for a while and be part of my respaced world

Where is Respaced Girl?

I'm starting to feel really bad not being able to make daily postings at the moment. But I was so busy this week...

dinner invitations, shopping, having coffee and cake in nice coffeeplaces, being a rockstar... you know what I mean...

a big hi to the Danish students who are busy doing exams and stuff like that...

What I did yesterday to improve Germany's situation:

I had breakfast with my friend and her goddaughter and had a very long conversation with the 8-year old girl. I don't like kids that much, so I think this is a great achievement ! I engaged her passion for reading by asking a lot of questions about her favourite book. (--> Reading is education! Education improves social equality! HA!)

She told me that she was really annoyed by some kids in the train who were so loud that she could not focus on the book she was reading. Poor girl!

Later that day I went to MCDonalds (only to buy a diet coke, of course! :P). I put the drawback (Rückgeld) in the small dispenser next to the register. The sticker on the dispenser said "SOS Kinderdorf", which is a German foundation which takes care of kids who have no one to take care of them in the way they deserve it or who have no one who takes care of them at all.

Ok, I only put 20 cent in the dispenser, but I've never done it before, so if I keep on putting my drawback money in there when I go to MCDonalds it definitely is better than doing nothing!

The Germans and Equality

This morning, I read in our newspaper about a study which had taken place in the 31 industrial countries. Even though Germany seems to do so well at the moment (less unemployment, good economy, bla bla), in terms of social equality it is not. Germany was ranked on place 15., after countries such as Canada or the Tschech Republic (!?).

The gap between high and low income rates is increasing here. Is Germany becoming the United States of Europe? (The USA was ranked on 25.) Why do I write about this? Do I have any idea of political science? No. But I know, I'm gonna be in Germany for the next 4 weeks. So why not do anything useful?

Let's make it a project:

I hope you don't expect too much of it. I'll start with a baby step.

The online shopping platform Dawanda (the German version of Etsy, a platform for creative people selling their mostly hand made and really cool products) is doing a charity auction which ends this thursday. You can buy all kinds of "charity products", which means that part of your money will go to the foundation Die Arche. The foundation helps poor teenagers and children in Germany with offering free meals, giving private lessons (Nachhilfe) or free time activity classes.

For the German readers: Dawanda is pretty cool. Looking for cool jewelry, stylish laptop/ipod sleeves, a bag for your tampons or sweet home accessories? On Dawanda you can find everything. Check it out (look for charity products). Sorry, I gotta go, have some shopping to do now!!

Preview of a respaced year 2011

Cheers! I hope you had a good NYE! Have you thought about any resolutions (vorsätze) for the new year? My resolution for 2011 is to become more relaxed. ha ha. But if you think about my entry a few weeks ago (The illuminative moment in copenhagen) I had already decided to become more Danish (in the sense of being modest etc. etc.) - I am working on it. Seriously!

It is the beginning of a new year which seems to become as awesome as the last one. I'll give you a taste of it - here's my 2011 preview :)

January: Stuttgart and Germany
1rst February: back in Aarhus, move out on the 24th and ----
from March - June Respaced Girl will write from another continent - AUSTRALIA!!!
Look forward to hear about stuff such as Australian Chinatown, Koalas, Fusion Food, Surfer boys and so on. I will take classes at the University of Technology in Sydney. And I will visit my cousin who lives in Brisbane.

Also in June, Respaced Girl will experience something REALLY really great. But I will write about that in another post. July I will spend in Stuttgart, Germany.

I don't know yet where I'll be in August and September, but what I know for sure is that
in October I'm going to move to Hamburg for my second year of my Master program.

I hope you'll keep on following me and leave comments on my blog! I love reading them.
Happy new year!
